Sungang MixC Market Hall, China Resources’ new mixed-use development is under construction in Shenzhen, China with anticipated completion by Q3 2022. Located on a former industrial zone, this retail-gastronomy destination will provide an immersive gastronomic experience under one roof.
10 DESIGN, chief operating officer, Miriam Auyeung, commented: “The site used to accommodate a warehouse within the old industrial district of Sungang and will soon be converted into a new CBD. MixC Market Hall is aimed to create a lifestyle complex around food and dining. The complex will mark an important milestone for the ongoing transformation of Sungang, acting as a catalyst to drive urban regeneration in the area.”
MixC Market Hall will accommodate 78,890sqm of retail and F&B dining space, with two office towers above providing 102,320sqm of workspace.
As part of the regeneration of the district, the overall masterplan will also include residential and serviced apartment towers, resettlement housing, and public amenities, providing a holistic redevelopment.
Jointly led by two design partners, Ted Givens and Chin Yong Ng, the concept for this new development is to break away from the conventional shopping mall design and instead draw inspiration from a more traditional market square, creating a central meeting place for public enjoyment. This resulted with a series of spaces created at different scales all interconnected.
The frontage of MixC Market Hall is marked by a stainless steel sculptural canopy which leads to a pedestrianised retail street, creating a new and dynamic boulevard for shoppers and diners to enjoy. The retail street is punctuated with the market hall entrance – the jewel of the landmark. It is animated by three floating box-shaped structures, the design of which is inspired by food truck containers.
Karen Pissarra of Design K, Dubai-based interior design firm, announces the completion of one-of-a-kind environmentally conscious store design in Oman. Go Green Oman, located in the heart of Muscat, is the first-ever ‘package-free’ supermarket to open in the GCC region. Recognising her intuitive talent for balancing functional, aesthetic and physical elements to create nurturing spaces, Go Green Oman approached Karen to lead the design, space planning, fit-out drawings and lighting plan for their cutting-edge store concept. The brief was the simple kind that requires attentive skill to execute well.
A contemporary, clean, and white store that made ample use of natural lighting alongside green plants and natural wood. In addition to this, a key focus was to be placed on the customer experience. As the regions first ever packaging-free store, Design K was focussed on how customers would navigate around the space. This involved very detailed thinking around the setup planning and proposed product display, recognising that retail design is not purely about the aesthetics of the space, but also on how it will perform functionally and commercially. The team wanted to ensure customers felt at ease when navigating around what would be a very new concept to them.
A delicate balance between function, design and customer experience was key. The design had to incorporate a large number of functional business requirements including ample storage and display units categorised by products, functional seating areas, a chiller area and large deli counter. The unique hands-on approach with the client saw the Design K team working alongside them with every last element on the inventory list to ensure it was represented and displayed in harmony with the overall design concept.
Additional specialist aspects included a number of wall units that were to incorporate gravity and scoop bins, a method in which customers placed groceries into reusable containers. The contemporary design was visualised with detailed 3D renders, smartly covering every last corner of the space. A material combination of natural white oak wood veneer, ample greenery, a seamless grey flooring finish and exposed ceiling with thoughtfully selected accessories completed the design concept. The result? A natural, light-filled Scandinavian-style space using visual storytelling that guides customers through the new concept store in an organic way. The airy lightness felt as you enter the space combined with the green-filled exposed ceiling features, natural-looking display units and thoughtfully placed resting areas take you on a grocery shopping journey filled with calm. From the merchandise tables to the vegetable stands and deli counter, every last corner is considered a true representation of the eco-conscious brand.
Pissarra says: “I strive to bring a sense of delight and peace through design to all of my projects, and Go Green Oman presented the perfect opportunity to instil this belief. We’re very proud of the outcome, having developed a design that truly emphasises and tells the story of the store’s commitment to the environment.’ The wholesome, thoughtful and green-focused store is now open in Muscat, Oman, welcoming discerning customers from across the city to shop without packaging. A pinnacle project that supports the country’s 2040 vision for a greener future.”
H2R Design was tasked to renovate Persian restaurant Anar, in Souk Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai. The brief was to revitalise the overall experience and to refresh the layout with natural flow, effervescence and personality. H2R Design designed a space that maintained the traditional spirit adding modern twists and feast-worthy tones.
H2R Design studied the colour palettes of Persian design including traditional art, music, language, tastes and flavours to delve deep into the cultural context and bring it forward to the modern world. They soon unravelled that the space required a smooth balance between powerful hues, soft textures and rugged edges. With that as a goal, the design team curated interiors that brought icy lapis lazuli together with igneous burgundies, timbers, metallics and ambient lighting to create a newly refined version of Anar.
H2R Design’s mantra is to go above and beyond designing incredible commercial spaces and instead to shape environments. That ideology is definitively demonstrated with Anar’s design starting from the grand courtyard entrance, to the art tattooed on the walls, the symmetry on the floors and ceilings to the carpentry and metallurgy throughout each corner of the restaurant.
Upon reaching the courtyard, guests will be greeted with a fountain and its dazzling blue geometric pattern tiles featured on the floor.
An open modern design tandoor kitchen allows guest to see chefs preparing traditional bread. Terracotta tiles were added as the backsplash to create a traditional look while functioning as a heat resistant material absorbing higher temperatures and reducing cracking.
To incorporate an Arabic architectural element, Mashrabiya panels were added in the open kitchen with a bronze antique finish. Perforated mesh in a copper finish were also used for interior detailing, joinery and trims on the walls.
Inside the right side of the restaurant, the special ceiling has a patterned metalwork finish, reflecting as an elaborate ornamentation but also provides balance and symmetry to overall design. This idea is further expressed on the floor design adding vibrancy with fresh white ceramic mosaic tiles, against the lively colours of the aqua and crimson furniture.
Modern but Persian inspired lighting was incorporated throughout the restaurant creating sanguine glows and warmth.
Other key features of the interiors redesign include antique smoky mirrors with a mesh of brass, developed by the contractor and inspired by the traditional wooden archways added by H2R Design.
The fabrics of the furniture are all Persian inspired colours and patterns, but here H2R Design didn’t want to be overly traditional. As a result, the colours are animated and full of energy.
Textured walls were developed to embody a natural feel throughout the space, and they were livened up with different applications and surfaces, to add depth and variation. The neutral tones were also maintained to allow the colours of the feature tiles, fabrics of the furniture and artwork to pop out.
A luxurious bar top was built using blue marble to accentuate the turquoise/blues of Persian design.
Lightly stained oak wood was used for the furniture, which is not traditional to Persian design; however, a contrast of lighter tones was needed to complement the floors.
Dubai Design District (d3) is re-opening with social distancing measures in place, but with the same great experience.

Hands, the creators of exquisite handmade carpets since 1881, has announced a nationwide design campaign to engage with the community this Ramadan from May, 2-15, 2020.
Reflecting on a possible slower-paced and simpler new way of life post COVID-19, and inspired by the growing international movement for climate change, and Mahatma Gandhi’s crusade to “live simply, so others may simply live”, Hands invites everyone to participate for a chance to win one of three exquisite handmade carpet from the Hands showroom in Dubai Design District.
Entrants will use their hands to create a visual representation of one of three themes – this can be anything from a doodle, sketch, line drawing, zentangle art, painting, collage, or even knitting or sewing – and will be accompanied by a picture of the hands that made it, and a caption to reflect the chosen theme. Entries to be posted on Instagram or Facebook, and the top three entries will be selected by an esteemed panel of judges including Rue Kothari, fair director of Downtown Design, Vera Dieckman, founder and designer at XO Atelier, and Ravi Patodia, founder of Hands Carpets.
Under the umbrella title of “the future is in our hands’, the proposed themes to provide inspiration are:
“In these challenging times, we are inspired by the messages of positivity coming from all around, appreciating a return to a simpler way of life, reconnecting at a deeper level with loved ones and the healing effects these quieter times have had on our environment” said Pranay Patodia, director, Hands Carpets. “Since Ramadan is a time of quiet reflection and of being thankful for our many blessings, we wanted to connect with the wider community in celebration of these positive developments, and encourage people to use their hands to make their own interpretations of this new way of life” he continued.
“Hands Carpets has a longstanding tradition of working with our local communities, actively supporting initiatives to protect the environment as well as people in need, with a particular focus on children. Indeed it is a passion driven by our director of CSR, Meenal Patodia, and the management which is shared by every single employee and is part of our DNA. In the spirit of the season we will be making a donation to the Emirates Red Crescent to support their mission to deliver groceries and medicines to registered families in need” added Gavin Lewis, general manager, Hands Carpets Middle East.

New lighting design and supply firm Light Link has secured a total of 20 projects within its first year of operation. Light Link has worked with high-profile clients, including Snap Inc., PwC, KPMG, Ericsson, Iron Mountain, and The Cove Abu Dhabi, to deliver a range of lighting solutions over the past twelve months. Founded on May 1, 2019, Light Link collaborates with end-users, design teams, contractors, MEP consultants, and project managers to create the perfect balance between art and engineering.
One of Light Link’s main areas of expertise is WELL testing and commissioning, which was required for PwC’s six-floor office project. For Snap Inc., Light Link was briefed to develop a unique design in keeping with global brand guidelines, and the curves of Snapchat’s logo were used to create bespoke ceiling lights using a non-linear wave system.
Light Link founder, Jaspal Bal said: “It has been an incredible first year, full of opportunities, plus some unexpected challenges for the market as a whole. As well as winning a significant amount of work, and exceeding our sales targets, we’ve built a specialised team to service different sectors and taken on a dedicated warehouse, streamlining the logistics process for our clients. Our growth has accelerated quicker than expected, even in a difficult climate. We listened to the industry and brought certain milestones forward to accommodate our customers’ needs. I am so grateful to our clients, staff, and stakeholders for their continued support and look forward to the next stage in our development.”
Design Infinity’s latest project for Sharjah Investors Services Centre (SAEED) is a key access point for global business owners and entrepreneurs in Sharjah. Design Infinity is proud to have completed the fit-out works for SAEED whose vision is to be recognised as a world-class facility for investors with continuous innovation and forward-thinking. The highlight of this project is the main entrance area which has spectacular customised lights mounted on the pillars.
It was a challenging project for Design Infinity. The main challenge being the main entrance area light details, these lights are customised light on the round pipe, for which the company approached two to three light suppliers and finally after a lot of hard work, they found the right product. On the basis on this, Design Infinity customised the GI pipe diameter and threaded on the bottom to fix the round cube light and for the straight light, they used the laser cutting randomly to light fixtures with diffusers. Another task was the light temperature of the stretched ceiling with customised lights for which they did the lux level calculation and proposed the light fixtures wastage.

Exploring the journey and designs of Beirut-based Borgi | Bastormagi
Beirut-based design studio Borgi | Bastormagi is headed by Nada Borgi and Etienne Bastormagi as they share many interests and a matching professional journey. Trained as architects and urban planners, they both worked in large practices before establishing their own individual architecture studios. Borgi | Bastormagi was founded in 2017, when Nada and Etienne were invited to participate in Milan’s Fuori Salone with their [me]rror project, an installation designed to reflect fragmented body parts. Both Nada and Etienne live and work in Beirut, drawing inspiration from their surroundings and daily lives. Fusing tradition with modernity, their designs are influenced by everyone’s attempt to find moments of balance and harmony amidst the chaos of the city. In their free time, they used to spend long hours in cafes drawing in their sketchbooks. Drawing nights eventually became more focussed on product design. Etienne’s artistic background and Nada’s interest in designing through narratives drafted the vision of Borgi | Bastormagi.
Their creations hold an urban dimension, while putting the user at the centre of the design – they aim to question the relationship between body and space, suggesting different behavioural patterns and offering playful experiences that defeat gravity and equilibrium. The choice of materials is based on Borgi | Bastormagi’s inclination for minimalistic forms and techniques. Recent projects include a three-piece furniture collection named Hyphens which was showcased at Maison & Objet in Paris in September 2019, and a range of objects designed for the Sursock Museum Store in Beirut. At IMM Cologne 2019, Nada and Etienne presented Beirutitude: Design & Architecture in Revolutionary Times, a talk exploring design processes in Beirut’s current political landscape. Nada and Etienne’s new collection called ‘Shaping 90’ reflects their interest in challenging gravity and redefining balance. With Shaping 90 the design duo re-thinks the corner by proposing three multi-functional pieces for daily use – the Fillet shelving unit, the Pivot series of mirrors and the Bevel light.
The urban landscape is a key source of inspiration for the studio. With their latest designs, Borgi|Bastormagi explore corner conditions and guidelines in the urban realm applying similar processes to their pieces.
