Architectural lighting brand TLS launches its first-ever collection—Carra
Architectural lighting brand TLS is launching its first-ever collection to answer the market demand for a simplified product offer. This marks a new step in the standardised product arena for TLS, who had been offering strictly bespoke lighting products to date.
Carra, the architecture-inspired collection, has clean and simple lines, providing uniform lighting in the shapes of squares and rectangles. Montreal-based TLS embraced their French surroundings to name the collection after the word carré, which means square. The standardized yet versatile collection offers 6 light sizes that can be powered by 4 different lighting engines (to achieve different lighting effects). In addition, clients can choose from 3 different frame colors and 4 mounting options.
The idea of developing collections came from the growing market demand for everyday products in surface-lighting. TLS originally grew by specialising in larger and more complex projects, the perfect match at the time for their tension LED system. Their patented system allows for endless flexibility in terms of design demands and structure restrictions, so they won a lot of large-scale projects. However, over the years, surface-lighting grew in popularity and today designers are integrating it in more day-to-day projects. With Carra being an off-the-shelf option, the specification process is much simpler and the lead time is shorter.
“Having high-quality surface lighting as a commodity product is something we felt was needed amongst the designers. Our technology is really unique due to the patented system we developed, and making that more easily accessible was the smart next step for us” says David Sellam, founder of TLS.
The design interest in the WELL building practice also influenced their decision to move forward with a collection.

Lighting Project of the Year was awarded to The loop, Oasis Mall Dubai by DZ Design. The Loop was conceived as an idea that can interconnect the volume at the atrium of the Oasis mall and distribute light at the otherwise dull escalator. The loop is inspired by the infinity symbol. The infinity symbol holds a deep meaning for spirituality, love, beauty, and power. In a world filled with distraction and complications, the infinity symbol represents a sense of simplicity, and balance.

Artemide showcases the latest lighting collection at Dubai Design Week 2020
The Italian lighting brand, Artemide participates in the latest edition of the Fair with installations and product launches at the ongoing Dubai Design Week being held at Dubai Design District (d3).
Artemide introduces its latest, forward-thinking lighting collections in partnership with established international architecture firms and developed using research based on cutting-edge technologies. Displayed through installations and showcases within the exhibitions, extensive programming across varying locations in the d3. As part of the d3 edit, a capsule exhibit featuring works across a diverse range of design disciplines by various individuals and brands in the d3, Artemide presents a scenographic installation of the innovative Discovery Space. Discovery, designed by Artemide’s Founder and President Ernesto Gismondi, interprets Artemide’s technological expertise and design knowledge to produce surprising solutions.
Artemide’s latest product collection La Linea designed in partnership with renowned international architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group: BIG is also presented within the district. Launched earlier this year, La Linea is a flexible tube of light, capable of freely twisting and turning in space according to undefined geometries. With its minimal form, the object’s versatility allows the structure to either adhere to the architecture or use folds to create highly expressive three-dimensional shapes and linear graphics. Due to the light’s high mechanical and thermal resistance, the product complements architectural forms both indoor and outdoor. La Linea is on show within the d3 Architectural Festival, a showcase of 40 of the best architectural works in the GCC region, ranging from small to large works that have contributed to both the economic and cultural value of the surrounding built environment.
Debuting at the 2020 edition, Artemide is supporting the exhibition’s charity initiative Designed for Sharing by Fantini Mosaici. Housed with the ground floor of the d3 building, Artemide’s Alphabet of Light circular suspensions, together with Tolomeo Maxi and Cadmo floor lamps, illuminate the 17 tables designed by artists and creatives that are participating in the UAE Red Crescent Authority silent auction.
Nulty completes the lighting scheme for Festival Plaza in Dubai
Lighting design consultancy Nulty has completed the lighting scheme for the interior and exterior sections of Festival Plaza in Dubai. Nulty delivered a high-quality and efficient lighting scheme in partnership with architect BSBG and focused on a design solution that provides a sense of intimacy, vibrancy, and comfort.
Horizontal and vertical surfaces are emphasised to give more volume to the space, whilst a combination of spot lighting and surface wash-lighting emphasises the scale of the high ceilings. All of the interior spaces utilise colour rendering light fixtures in order to provide as much lustre as possible. A variety of layers of light creates a visual hierarchy by creating contrast and improved composition. The primary lighting layer evokes general uniform illumination, perfect for functionality and wayfinding, via a combination of linear lights, downlights and wall-washers.
A second layer of lighting provides the vertical illumination, highlighting the walls and grazing the façade fins. A third and final layer of light creates an additional feature within the curved ceilings, creating a dramatic and vibrant effect. Nulty specified a DALI based lighting control system to provide flexibility and ensure that the artificial lighting is balanced with the daylight that pours through the windows.
A sustainable lighting design has been achieved through a combination of considered selections of efficient luminaires and making use of new low-energy lamp technology. The lighting is controlled to ensure that light only falls where and when required in order to provide an energy-efficient solution. Diffused general lighting combined with accent lighting in specific areas, highlights dramatic finishes, particularly surrounding the outside space.
The façade of the mall boasts an angular design which has been highlighted with careful application of wall-washing and discreet luminaires. The main focus for Nulty’s work on the façade was to display the variation in architectural elements and tie them all together through the lighting. This has resulted in an impressive canvas which entices visitors and encourages them to spend time at the mall.
Ahmed Saliem, project director at Nulty Dubai ,comments: “It was a pleasure working on this project and we are so proud of the result. We worked closely with the design team to bring out the true character of the building and enhance the experience for the end user. The result is a mall that is inviting, comforting and vibrant.”
Why ‘Thermally Speaking’ installation is a revolution in the field of lighting design and architecture?
Revealing our body heat in three-dimensional space through experiential illumination, “Thermally Speaking” project in Ontario, Canada used thermography and infrared measuring instruments to uncover the fields of energy of which we’re all apart. The responsive installation transformed Toronto’s Fort York Visitor Centre for Nuit Blanche 2019, providing a glimpse into a future of body temperature readings, creative data visualisation, and surveillance fields.
Designed by LeuWebb Projects and produced in collaboration with Mulvey & Banani Lighting as part of their CITYLights Toronto initiative, the installation also provided an opportunity for technical development for students in the field of lighting design and architecture.
Audiences were invited to move through, over and around the ramp of the Visitor Centre both as observers and subjects of observation, participants in dialogue with the phenomena around them. Thermal imaging cameras relayed and translated the heat energy of visitors into a shifting curtain of light, animating the channel glass facades of the existing building.

Sharaf DG Energy delivers lighting retrofit project at Drydocks World Dubai
Sharaf DG Energy has successfully completed a lighting retrofit project at Drydocks World-Dubai, with the aim of deploying energy saving measures and tackling the pressure on natural resources. The project is expected to result in annual savings of AED600,000 for three years and involved replacing 5500 fluorescent, metal halide and conventional lights with high efficient LED fixtures.
The project was implemented on five buildings and three mess, workshops, camp streets, which are mainly used for the Junior Staff Accommodations of the shipyard. Retrofitting, a measure taken to replace conventional light fittings and accessories with new energy saving LED lights, is a key component in helping the UAE achieve their sustainable related targets.
With the help of the latest technologies, commercial and industrial sectors can now receive a number of benefits. Advantages include the reduction of energy consumption and carbon emissions, productivity enhancement, a decreased amount of maintenance expenditure and the ability to ensure more safety measures are in place for workers.
As the Junior Staff Accommodation buildings were considered outdated, companies have refrained from working on them. In turn, this has left the retrofitting project on hold for a period of two years with suggestions of demolishing them altogether. Sharaf DG Energy fortunately took on the project and have successfully completed it on 31st May 2020.
The organisation augmented the whole plan in a record timeframe and overachieved with the annual savings against proposed savings. Throughout the project, Sharaf Electronics ensured and maintained the highest safety standards with zero accidents on site.
