January 18-22, 2024

In 2024, Maison&Objet marks 30 years of French-inspired excellence in the home decordesign and lifestyle industry. Marking this occasion, the show will take visitors on a journey to a re-enchanted future, where technology and nature exist in harmony. Challenging the antithesis in its title, TECH EDEN, the theme of this anniversary year will be explored throughout 2024 at the Paris fair, in the city’s showrooms, and on M.O.M marketplace. It will be embodied in the three areas of expression dear to Maison&Objet: interior architectureretail, and hospitality. In continuation of last year’s theme “ENJOY!”, TECH EDEN conveys a dream-like optimism through shape and color, focussing this time on futuristic biophilia, a new world of well-being.

“Maison&Objet is more attentive than ever to its customers and their needs, positioning itself at the heart of key challenges, now and in the future, by connecting creativity, innovation and eco-responsibility. Our ambition is to illustrate all the opportunities available to the home décor, design and lifestyle sector, and actively support its development. This is reflected in the quality of the program of events for the upcoming edition: the Designer of the Year’s innovative project, the development of a What’s New? space providing concrete responses to the challenges in retail, and the Hospitality Lab, embodying a unique forward-looking vision of the hybridization of hospitality venues.” – Mélanie Leroy, Managing Director

New Futures and Paradise Regained

Maison&Objet’s 2024 theme TECH EDEN was devised in collaboration with the creative strategy agency Peclers Paris, which sees it as an opportunity to “highlight the profound evolution in the relationship between science and nature, and project it into a sustainable and desirable future.” Seeking to bring substance and poetry to the notion of progress, Peclers offers a progressive concept enriched by scenographic interpretations, at times soothing, at times energizing, and always inspiring. This narrative, reconciling a futuristic utopia with new realities, will feed into the show’s activities, encompassing all sectors of interior decoration and designarts and craftsretaildecor and hospitality. Through immersive experiences, TECH EDEN invites professionals to rethink spatial design and layout, augmented by technological innovation, and employ innovative aesthetic and environmental approaches. Science fiction has entered a new era and adopted a new discourse. It is no longer modeled on the kind of journey through space and time at the mercy of mysterious aliens filmed by Stanley Kubrick in his cult movie 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). While James Cameron’s latest epic Avatar 2 (2022) immerses us in a fantastical natural environment, Thomas Cailley’s Animal Kingdom (2023) explores the idea of mutation in a world of half-human, half-animal hybrids, symbolising profound cultural and societal change, all enhanced by a poetic and emotional narrative. The desire in this new-generation narrative is no longer to reclaim space, but rather an original paradise and a return to a wild existence exalted by scientific progress.

Soft Tech As A Driver Of Well-being

As societal crises and tensions reinforce our need to feel at ease in our own homes, cutting-edge technologies are responding with new services inspired by nature and offering a sophisticated version of it. Such is the case with Once Upon a Dream, a capsule room designed by Mathieu Lehanneur for the reopening of Hôtel de Marc. To encourage more restorative sleep, the principle of this ideal room is based on artificial and programmable management of natural day/night cycles. Reflecting this quest for well-being at home, indeed in all the places we occupy in our everyday lives – the office, a hotel room, even the spa – Maison&Objet launched its new ”Well-Being & Beauty” sector in September 2023, featuring a selection which reconciles feel-good rituals and soft technological innovations to create a cocoon-like feeling at home. Advances in digital technology, smartphones and tablets with ever more functions, 3D printing processes, the exponential growth of AI (Artificial Intelligence), and numerous connected and increasingly intuitive objects, are also supporting service design and mobility, reinforcing this quest for well-being. In the words of Jean-Louis Frechin, director and founder of NoDesign.net, as well as an author, teacher at École Camondo in Paris, and specialist in digital design and innovation: “We are embarking on a fusion between our natural environment and technology. This new natural epoch, the Anthropocene, suffers from imbalances brought on by abuse of technology and reckless use of the planet’s resources, something which must be readjusted. It is through physics, scientific phenomena and the right technologies that designers will be able to develop sustainable and balanced solutions. In the age of Artificial Intelligence, when many objects can be designed and produced automatically, the only question is how we wish to inhabit this world…”.

Technophile Explorers In Search of Utopia

“Sensitive explorers are embracing technological advances and using them to develop an augmented, tailor-made form of everyday life, with the goal of creating a soothing, dreamlike environment”, explains Brune Ouakrat, Strategic Planner & Futurologist, and Charlotte Cazals, Designer & Trend Forecaster at Peclers Paris. This gives rise to the concept of biophilic design and awakening, sustainable and technological experiments aimed at an emerging tribe brought together by social media. In a hyper-connected, digitised and physical world where reality and fiction meet, virtual tours and 3D augmentedreality glasses go hand in hand with aromatherapy and light therapy, stimulating all five human senses in the hospitality venues of tomorrow. Restaurants designed in welcoming “home-like” decor are re-emerging, while the Savoy Palace’s Laurea Spa offers total immersion in greenery, in imitation of Madeira’s legendary forest. Tomorrow’s consumers are seeking more qualitative experiences, but with great development potential and a resolutely eco-responsible dimension, such as the 3Dprinted hotel project, El Cosmico in Texas, designed in collaboration with BIGICON, and Liz Lambert.

The Power of Good Design – Design Middle East

The Power of Good Design – Design Middle East

The Power of Good Design – Design Middle East

The Jasra House project in Bahrain by Salloum & Salloum Architects is all about quality of life and good design.

Jasra House in Bahrain is a beautiful and simple home property that takes you back to simplicity. The project by Salloum & Salloum Architects (S&S) provides its owners with a holistic experience. S&S is an award-winning, RIBA chartered, architecture and interior design studio with offices in Surrey (UK) and Bahrain.

For the project, the customers inherited a block of land at a working farm in an area rich in wildlife and palm trees in Jasra, Kingdom of Bahrain; nevertheless, farming practises are declining in favour of more profitable industries such as development. The clients wanted to preserve as much of the landscape as possible to support the existing wild life and greenery, so any proposal had to support this brief, and any future house had to be connected to nature, and the proposal had to include a vegetable patch where the clients could grow their own produce.

The design of the project started in 2017, and went on site in April 2019, and faced many delays due to COVID-19. The project was finally completed and occupied in November 2022, and therefore the villa has been occupied for one year.

The plot area was 4000sqm with the building having a BUA of 2100sqm out of which 700 sqm of that is for the basement. The total BUA area above ground is therefore 1400sqm with site coverage of approx. 35%. It is important to note that as per the planning regulations in Bahrain site coverage is allowed up to 55% however it was decided very early on that the owners wanted to not utilise the allowable coverage and to have more landscape than building.

The concept of Jasra house was to create an architecturally inspirational piece of design carefully curated around the lifestyle of the clients. It is a culmination of a research driven piece of architecture meticulously detailed that borrows ideas from vernacular architecture in the Gulf re-interpreted by using contemporary ideas and living standards. S&S designed a villa with an open courtyard in the middle where every room with large glazed surfaces looks onto nature thus creating a catalyst for social engagement and an opportunity for the family to interact especially in a world where social media is slowly eroding the family unit.

The site is in a region of Bahrain rich in agricultural history and greenery. S&S aimed to create a building that felt connected to nature by incorporating plants into the architecture and emphasising the historical significance of the site. They also addressed having a basement that held all of the services with the customer very early on, which meant that as much of the site could be left to be enjoyed as a planted space and to debate the rising cost of energy and water shortages.

One of the primary challenges was to find a suitable contractor that can deliver to such quality and workmanship and to understand the level of details and complexity that is required and a building that can meet the budget. The next challenge was to ensure that all M&E systems are designed to be hidden away from the naked eye and thirdly to find a glazing and aluminum system that can provide the height of 4m clear glazed surfaces and be able to slide and perform in the extreme temperatures in the Gulf with temperatures regularly reaching upto 49 degrees in the summer. S&S says that the clients were excellent to work with, they worked closely with their office and were very supportive of the overall design vision throughout the many challenges the project faced and remained committed throughout the process.

The structure was designed in post tensioned concrete which meant there was an overall saving of about 20% in the use of reinforced concrete thus making the structure more environmentally conscious.

The design studio collaborated closely with Otima, an aluminium and glazing system that performs at 4m heights, provides thermal efficiency in high temperatures, and allows maximum visibility while maintaining very slender profiles. The Otima team was really helpful and provided S&S with technical skills to help them reach the project’s overall objective. The glass also gave an opportunity and a sense of interconnectedness between the rooms and with nature.

The firm takes a unique approach to each project, paying close attention to details. The family dining table, for example, was designed by us to be constructed of travertine; the table was made by a specialist stone mason in Italy from a pre-selected block of marble and delivered to Bahrain; the table weight around one tone and had to be lifted into place by a specialist crane. These nuances take a long time to complete, but they make or break the project.  This philosophy runs through everything they do at S&S architects.

One of the first decisions they made early on in this project was to create a basement to house all of the services, parking, and M&E equipment. They investigated the villa’s thermal performance and shading plan. The entire AC conditioning system is based on a VRF technology, which is more energy efficient and reduces electricity demand by 40%. The villas’ walls were well insulated, and open glass spaces were located away from or recessed from direct sunlight to reduce solar gain.

The team installed an RO plant to purify municipal water to drinking grade and S&S used the redundant water from the RO plant back to be used for the landscape.  All other equipment such as the water tanks, pumps were located in the basement. This is unique in Bahrain, where mechanical equipment is frequently located on the top. The benefits of storing all of this equipment in the basement included having cold water in the summer months and having the equipment last longer, eliminating the need for maintenance and equipment replacement.

This structure highlights how good design can have a positive impact on how good residential architecture can be. It has certainly had a very positive impact on the clients; they are quite delighted to live in the house and can observe firsthand how smart design can improve one’s outlook. Also, this piece of architecture has taught other designers that there is a chance to create design-led architecture.

Broadway Interiors redesigns 261 Bar & Restaurant at The Els Club Dubai – Design Middle East

Broadway Interiors redesigns 261 Bar & Restaurant at The Els Club Dubai – Design Middle East

Broadway Interiors redesigns 261 Bar & Restaurant at The Els Club Dubai – Design Middle East

Broadway Interiors, a Dubai-based interior design studio, unveils the interiors of The Els Club’s refurbished 261 Bar & Restaurant. This transformative project, which was recently finished, reimagines the convergence of modern design with a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. The restaurant is set within The Els Club, affording spectacular views of the famous golf course, as a tribute to Ernie Els’ incredible 2003 Mercedes Championship victory. Broadway Interiors’ refurbishment of 330sqm contains various design details that considerably improve the overall eating experience. The restaurant’s focal point is a large-scale preserved olive tree strategically placed in the centre of an elliptical shaped custom-made communal seating booth.

Relocating the bar to open up the views of the golf course, the restaurant is a blend of timeless materials and warm aesthetics. The décor seamlessly blends traditional materials, such as warm wood tones and black-and-white porcelain tiles, with contemporary design styling. Vertical green walls extend towards the ceilings, infusing a sense of tranquility and connection to nature and the surroundings, further enhancing the intimate, homely feel. Additionally, diverse seating options, from custom booths to high bar tables and Chesterfield sofas, cater to a range of dining and lounge experiences. The décor, a mix of warm wood, combined with earthy tones throughout, are coupled with harmonious decorative patterned fabrics, introducing a twist of fun and colour, creating a casual yet sophisticated vibe.

Balancing the needs of families and sports enthusiasts, 261 Bar & Restaurant offers a dual-concept space. It smoothly transitions from a relaxed dining area ideal for families to a lively sports bar, catering to golf and other sports fans. The expansive outdoor terrace, a haven for families and pet owners, especially during the cooler months, adds to the venue’s appeal. Significant changes include the addition of the conservatory, completing the perfect geometry of the space for the dual function venue. Washrooms have been remodelled and increased in size, as well as the introduction of a new pastry and deli bar, to accommodate grab and go and more timely food options. “Over the years, working on various projects within The Els Club, we’ve developed a deep understanding of the unique clientele that this golf club attracts. Each project, including the recent redesign of the 261 Bar & Restaurant, has been an opportunity to fine-tune our approach to meet the specific tastes and preferences of the Club’s members and visitors. Our designs are tailored to enhance their experience, blending timeless design with comfort in a way that resonates with the sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere of the Club,” says Chris Barnes, founder of Broadway Interiors.

Another interesting feature of the redesign is the incorporation of Oryx switchable smart glass on the glass roof, allowing adjustable control of natural light. This technology ensures a comfortable dining experience, irrespective of the time of day, to further enhance the experience. Artwork utilises Ernie’s personal memories and famous quotes, adding connection between him and the venue. The integration of bi-folding doors from Oryx at the end of the redesign process further enhances the venue’s dynamism and all year-round flexibility. These doors open up to the terrace and a golf course, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor settings and embracing Dubai’s warm climate. Broadway Interiors’ redesign of 261 Bar & Restaurant epitomises the harmony of innovative design, functionality, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, establishing the venue as a distinguished destination in Dubai’s dining scene.

Nakkash Design Studio creates a tropical modernist paradise in Dubai’s Meadows – Design Middle East

Nakkash Design Studio creates a tropical modernist paradise in Dubai’s Meadows – Design Middle East

Nakkash Design Studio creates a tropical modernist paradise in Dubai’s Meadows – Design Middle East

Nakkash Design Studio’s latest interior design project is a refreshing revamp for a lavish 6,600 sq. ft. two-storey residence. Located in the verdant gated community of Dubai’s Meadows, the 6-bedroom villa is the dream home of a young family who recently relocated to the Emirate after a considerable spell in Hongkong.

When the house was purchased in 2021, it had already been lived-in for a few years and its interiors were typical of the cookie cut villas in the locality.  The couple desired a modern makeover infused with warmth and personality, an overhaul that would transform the villa into a cosy family home, a welcoming space to entertain guests and a place to house their eclectic art collection acquired during their time in the Far East.

House with a View

During the site visit, the villa’s prime location and access to extraordinary views of the lake became apparent to the design team. Inspired by this, the award-winning, multi-disciplinary practice took on a contextual approach to the redesign centred around blurring the lines between indoor-outdoor living experience while maximizing the views.

The villa’s open plan, large windows, soft boundaries between inside/outside spaces, use of plants, natural materials, and extensive presence of furniture from Brazil and Bali give the interiors a distinct touch of tropical modernism.

Design Director Omar Nakkash’s years of experience buying and curating furniture, artwork and accessories for his renowned family business – Nakkash, is reflected in the outstanding attention to detail and FF&E design for the project.

Warm welcome

The main entrance door opens into a light and airy living room with an uninterrupted view of the lush backyard and the lake beyond.

The remodelled flooring comprising of light grey ceramic tiles in large format gives a sense of continuity. A rectangular patch of smaller tiles with semi-circular motif pleasantly interjects the space, imparting a vintage art deco feel. The centrepiece is a Barcelona Day Bed in golden tan leather, a 1930 classic by Mies van der Rohe.

The seating area at the far end of the room facing the large window, is a neatly arranged symphony of Brazilian furniture. The layout is deliberately symmetrical to create balance and an atmosphere of conviviality.

An abstract painting from an artist in Bali, a migrant captured in a series of mixed media prints, and reductionist portraits of native Americans captured on a large width fabric from the House of Pierre Frey are some of the striking pieces of art in the room.

Other characteristic elements include bespoke wooden doors with tiny circular panes, sculptural mirrors, a flamboyant Vertigo Pendant Lamp from Petite Friture and twin heavy bottomed book cases in walnut wood and brass filling the empty corners and anchoring the space with their presence.

Design Director Omar Nakkash

Bonding spaces

To the left of the main entrance is the heart of the home – the family’s private dining area abuzz with activity during mealtimes. This intimate space was specially crafted by expanding the footprint of the villa. Awash with natural light from a large step-out window and the skylight above, the space has a soothing view into the landscaped lawn. The space is made extra cosy with a round table for five and a picture wall decorated with family portraits.

Adjoining the family room, separated by a sliding door, is a formal dining space for 8 with cane and walnut wood chairs set around a sleek white table. An accent wall covered with panels of olive-green sisal offers the perfect background for a whimsical installation – a dozen giant broken eggs with luminous gold leaf interiors, created by Dann Foley for Phillips Collection.

A meditative figure perched on the console table, a simple carved wood totem pole from Brazil and a series of four multi-media gold leaf paintings are the other touches of art in the space.

A small curtain wall serves the dual function of creating a separation between the formal dining and the living space and whilst offering additional gallery space to hang precious work of art.

East meets West

The interiors of the TV room combine influences from the family’s far eastern past and elements of contemporary western living. Lines and curves meet harmoniously to create a sense of ease.

A comfy L-shaped sofa – a TV room essential, sculptural wall scones, a set of 4 wood carvings from Hongkong, stately armchairs from Brazil, and an assortment of round coffee tables define the space.

 Place of pause

The staircase, often a dismissible architectural element, gets a dramatic uplift in this residence.

The curved wall encasing the flight of stairs is treated in textured brown wallcovering to compliment the Omani beige marble on the steps, one of the few elements retained from the original design. A solid concrete balustrade painted in stark white lends the staircase its winding sculptural quality, elevating it from the utilitarian to the artistic.

The dead space under the stairs is converted into a place of pause with a Brazilian armchair in walnut wood and cane, a black coffee table and a cloud-shaped handmade rug from Hands. An Amazon driftwood table piece and a caramel brown crystal orb are finishing touches that add to the sculptural poise of the space.

Tranquil Outdoors

The landscaping and outdoor design by Nakkash is a dream in blues, greens and touches of brown.

A 4x8m pergola shelters the lounge and dining area finished with treated wooden flooring and handpicked outdoor furniture. A full-length sofa and armchairs from the Kobo collection by Stephane De Winter for Manutti is singular for its structure made entirely of hand-woven rope around welded aluminium frames while Dedon’s AIIR chairs by GamFratesi set around a table for 8, elevates the outdoor dining experience. Bright green accessories give the space an extra pop.

A tropical vibe is constructed through the cohesion of several elements: the overflow pool seemingly blending into the lake, rich lawns, palm shrubs and two deliciously comfortable lounge chairs and foot rests that appear to conspire under the shade of the frangipani.

An amalgam of inspiration from Bali, Brazil, Hongkong and Dubai, Villa 28 by Nakkash Design Studio is nothing short of a retreat. Simple and harmonious, it is an unexpected sultry oasis in Dubai’s urban habitat.

DecoHub.io: The New Immersive Reality Concept by Lladró

We are living in an era of changes and evolution. Immersive technology has grown immensely in the past few decades and is continuing to progress. Virtual Reality (VR) has even been described as the learning aid of the 21st century, and Lladró is glad to be at the avant-garde merging design and craftsmanship with technology. This new digital approach allows us to discover unique experiences that combine tradition with innovation, and the best-designed digital spaces. DecoHub.io is a new concept in immersive reality. The first platform applying cutting-edge technology to bespoke design and interiors promises to revolutionize the world of design and architecture.

At DecoHub.io, the user can easily find immersive and inspiring experiences, in the format of exhibition galleries, pop-ups, limited editions, or private presentations. In its launch, the most prominent interior designers of the moment join, such as Puntofilipino, Alejandra Pombo, Erico Navazo, Miriam Alía, Alba de la Fuente, or the AI expert and British architect Amir Hossein Noori, the creator of DecoHub’s interior and exterior spaces. They all bring their talent to this exciting and inspiring project with top-tier brands like Lladró, Bang & Olufsen, ECOcero, Glamora, ICÓNICO, SolidNature, OnWall Surfaces, Ormo’s, or Cosentino.

Gema Gutiérrez from Puntofilipino in collaboration with Lladró created Ossatura, an incredibly bold space perched in the digital universe. Ossatura is a fascinating interior, encompassing primary colors and layered muted tones with design pieces. It carefully combines materials like high-gloss lacquered woods with striking counterparts like marble, wallpaper, and micro-cement, in a living room with a modern sensibility honoring the formality of historical architecture.

The space mixes a myriad of bright shades and tints, as well as layered volume in contrast to the minimalist surroundings. «We avoided overwhelming the senses by creating a push-pull tension of polished, reflective, and matte elements, as well as soft and strong elements”. Soft Blown chandeliers by Nichetto Studio for Lladró center the focus of the room, well accompanied by Mokuren by Naoto Fukasawa, Nightbloom by Marcel Wanders and Seasons to add light to the space. A selection of Lladró’s The Guest, unique and full of color, dresses one of the walls. Panthers from the Origami collection and The Lover in glossy porcelain are also present in “an alchemy of styles”, as Gutiérrez described.

Roar creates a collaborative workspace in Dubai for multinational law firm White & Case – Design Middle East

Roar’s design for White & Case’s new headquarters in Dubai deftly combines the law firm’s historic heritage with a local flare, grounding it in its Emirati environment while upholding the company’s deep-rooted worldwide ideals. The room design is a true collaborative process with White & Case’s Head of Design and senior partners, and is located in the famous ICD Brookfield Place overlooking two of the city’s most iconic attractions – the Museum of the Future and the Burj Khalifa.

Pallavi Dean, Founder & Creative Director at Roar, comments: “We held a series of focus groups with White & Case’s Dubai team and our in-house psychologist to find out what key requirements needed to be met in the new office, both from practical and wellbeing perspectives. It was a fair process where everyone’s needs and desires were heard and incorporated in the design.”

The office is split between two floors – Floors 8 and 9 within a larger office block – to enable a sense of collectivism and to ease cooperation, Roar chose to connect the two floors with a sculptural, spiral-shaped staircase – the first of its kind in the building.

To create a sense of openness and free-movement to the office, Roar has centralised all the senior partners’ offices towards the core of the floor while dedicating the periphery to an undivided work space and team rooms.

Privacy is an essential element in a law firm, which Roar needed to take into consideration. With this in mind, ’defensible’ spaces surrounded by small acoustic barriers were created within the open-plan area, which, together with the white noise speakers, help to provide a real sense of confidentiality.

Pallavi Dean elaborates on the layout: “Central to our concept was to bring unity to the workflow of the five distinct departments that make up White & Case through our interior design. While each department – we call them ‘neighbourhoods’! – has access to closed offices for confidential client work, there is plenty of open-plan space coupled with team rooms, cockpit offices and ‘focus’ pods for collaborative work and to create a sense of community.”

LW Design creates playful and bold vibe for The Lunatic Fringe – Design Middle East

The Lunatic Fringe by LW Design is a high-end hair and beauty salon with VIP appeal. The salon design includes quirky and eye-catching components to provide a fully distinct and unforgettable salon experience.

To create a feminine take on a members club, with bold and playful accents paired with subtle and soft elements, creating an exciting yet serene atmosphere for clients.

Stunning ribbed pink onyx wraps around the feature nail bar. Delicately detailed wall panelling runs throughout the salon, with subtle bronze metal inlays. Gorgeous vintage style oversized chandeliers feature in the main salon, with a quirky trellis wall panelling backdrop. Deep black panelling and a striking gold ceiling coffer bring drama to the VIP room.

Throughout the area, there is a strong sense of celebrating femininity in a very beautiful and sophisticated way. The gentle green wall panelling is accented by warm pink blush tones in the curtain fabric and banquette. The Lunatic Fringe aims to make women feel and look beautiful, and to leave them feeling distinct and confident.

Exact ergonomics were critical to ensuring that services were delivered effectively and that customers were comfortable during their treatments. LW Design intended to provide the utmost sense of well-being while also offering a completely distinct and unconventional experience. The designers were mindful of the short schedules and item lead times. Designers promptly provided feedback on several prototypes during the design process to keep the site moving forward.

Attention to detail was key, especially with the materials used. Designers ensured that all elements were rightfully considered. They retained a simple colour palette to keep the salon from feeling overcomplicated and busy. Soft green panelling and fresh mosaic marble flooring are offset with the warmth of the subtle pink stone in the onyx bar, bronze metal finishes and blush fabrics.

LW Design chose professional high-end salon furniture from Maletti and incorporated whimsical details like fringe detailing. The manicure/pedicure chairs were custom-made to meet the exact specifications of the service setup, with swivel manicure tables attached to the chairs’ arms. All additional furniture was constructed to order in order to offer a one-of-a-kind experience.
