Godwin Austen Johnson incorporates local cultural elements into the DoubleTree by Hilton Sharjah project
Inspired by Sharjah’s unique heritage and culture, the DoubleTree by Hilton Sharjah Waterfront Hotel & Residences by Godwin Austen Johnson (GAJ) sits comfortably within its environment as a modern interpretation of a classic design inspired by three key elements. For the first element, guests are greeted by a stylised vertical version of a historic banyan tree structure at the entrance. The Rolla tree was once a favourite spot for residents to sit under the dense shade of the branches to wait for the cargo boats arriving at the nearby port. The abstract tree sculptures and contemporary majlis-style seating area replicate these gathering points reminding guests of the welcoming culture of the emirate.
The story continues, with a second element, through a modern interpretation of the Irish style of housing, a traditional palm leaf structure of early UAE homes, through stylised cladding and installations cleverly incorporated into the public space of the lobby area.
The third element is an acknowledgement of the UAE’s ancient art of pearling which is reflected in the luxurious materials used throughout the project and highlighted by a monochrome palette that borrows heavily from the blue shades of the ocean and the cool green shades of the Rolla tree accented by warm desert orange and lustrous pink pearl tones.
Thoughtfully designed seating areas are enclosed by a wall library shelving treatment housing a large collection of contemporary art and books which is extended into the coffee shop with its large communal table and elegant counter detail.
The wellness facilities include a spacious wooden-floor gym as well as a secluded indoor pool leading into a steam room and unique Himalayan Salt Sauna.

Majid Al Futtaim unveils the first green wall in Sharjah
Majid Al Futtaim Communities, part of “Majid Al Futtaim Properties”, continues to drive more sustainable and eco-friendly buildings, leading into a new era of innovation, adaptation, and solution. Following their ambition to develop thriving and sustainable communities, underpinned by placemaking environments derived from the principles of well-being, Al Zahia, Sharjah’s premier lifestyle destination, recently announced the completion of their living wall, the first vertical garden across the Emirate of Sharjah.
Presenting a lush work of art in the community spaces, the vertical garden at Al Zahia is home to over 15,000 plants of different species and spans across 160sqm. As part of the highly anticipated community clubhouse, Majid Al Futtaim Communities continues to lead the way in innovative and customer-centric destinations, reinforcing Al Zahia’s position as Sharjah’s most sought-after destination.
Earning global recognition due to their distinct economic and ecological advantages and rising environmental awareness, green walls have emerged as an essential component of sustainable urban development. Contributing to healthy communities, living walls can serve as a means of expression, creating a unique space for people to express themselves in various ways. Naturally infusing the air with oxygen, plants take in more CO2 than they release, removing traces of toxic chemicals and contributing towards cleaner, more oxygenated air. Absorbing approximately 41% more noise than traditional walls, the vertical gardens are not only beautiful and healthy; they equally reduce noise from external surroundings and activities.
“At Majid Al Futtaim our communities are about embedding local culture, creating more sustainable environments, capturing the beauty of nature while recognising the potential for healthy living. Studies show that living in a green environment brings people together and that small-scale greenery, has a positive effect on social cohesion in neighbourhoods. Driven by our placemaking principles and commitment to break boundaries, Al Zahia is underway in redefining Sharjah’s living experience.,” said Hawazen Esber, Chief Executive Officer, Majid Al Futtaim Communities.
Designed to provide a welcoming environment ideally suited for families, Al Zahia offers homeowners contemporary and well-designed homes, surrounded by green spaces and a range of upscale amenities.
Located within walking distance of the recently opened City Centre Al Zahia, the most exciting and innovative shopping and dining destination in Sharjah, the one-million-square-metre residential community, owned by Sharjah Holding – a joint venture between Majid Al Futtaim Properties and Sharjah Asset Management.

Institutional exhibition of The Otolith Group opens at Sharjah Art Foundation
Xenogenesis, presented by Sharjah Art Foundation from 13 November 2021 to 5 February 2022, brings together a selection of key works by The Otolith Group, the London-based art collective consisting of Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun, founded in 2002.
Featuring a cross-section of works produced by the collective between 2011 and 2018, the exhibition reflects the artists’ ongoing commitment to creating what they call ‘a science fiction of the present’ through images, voices, sounds and performance.
Suspended between fiction, poetry, documentary and theory, The Otolith Group’s post-cinematic films, high-definition videos and multiple screen installations address contemporary social issues and themes inherited from colonialism, the way in which humans have impacted the earth, and the influence of new media on human activities.
The title of the exhibition references the African American science fiction novelist Octavia Butler’s legendary Xenogenesis trilogy. Butler’s ideas inform Eshun and Sagar’s longstanding preoccupation with the promise and threat of the idea of ‘alien becoming’, or ‘becoming alien’.
The most recent work in the exhibition is O Horizon (2018). The term O Horizon is used by soil scientists to refer to the surface layer of organic matter continually altered by human existence.
Sagar and Eshun adopted this agronomic term for their study of Santinketan, West Bengal, India, where the poet, dramatist, essayist, composer, artist, educator, social reformer, and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) founded the Visva Bharati University in 1921.
In its portrait of recitals, performances, choreography, and discussion situated within an ongoing environmental struggle to preserve the health of soil against the attrition of global warming, O Horizon suggests the outlines of a Tagorean ethos for the 21st century.
Another prominent work in the exhibition is The Third Part of the Third Measure (2017), co-commissioned by Sharjah Art Foundation for Sharjah Biennial 13 (SB13), and part of the Foundation’s Collection.
The Third Part of the Third Measure emerges from The Otolith Group’s longstanding engagement with the work of the African American composer Julius Eastman (1940–1990).
Filmed and recorded in six takes with three cameras at RAK Studios in St John’s Wood, North London, on 12 and 13 February 2017, The Third Part of the Third Measure returns to the moment of 16 January 1980 when Eastman led three pianists in a performance of his controversial compositions.
Several works in the exhibition explore the impact of new media on humans, including Anathema (2011). By descending beneath the LCD screens of advertisements for smartphones, laptops and flat screen televisions, Anathema envisions the material substrate of liquid crystal technology as a sentient entity.
From this perspective, liquid crystal is reimagined as an entity that possesses consumers for its own occult objectives. Anathema exemplifies Eshun and Sagar’s enduring preoccupation with science fiction as a diagnosis of the present rather than the future. In From Left to Night (2015), the biomorphically geometric digital abstractions that pass across the multiple screens bring viewers into a sustained encounter with the material substrate of liquid crystals beneath the screens of smartphones, laptops, and flat screen televisions.
From Left to Night envisions the hidden technology of the liquid crystal as an abstract landscape that estranges the forms of mimetic rivalry produced by the active screens of social media.
In Statecraft: An Incomplete Timeline of Independence (2014-2019), commemorative stamps provide The Otolith Group with a rich iconography for narrating the political imaginary of African independence, as mass-manufactured designs issued to memorialise significant national events.
By sequencing the births and military coups d’etat of Africa’s new nation states in a historical timeline, Statecraft brings viewers face to face with the dissimulative aesthetics of national unity.
Xenogenesis was first shown at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven in May 2019 and was curated by Annie Fletcher. Its presentation in Sharjah is organised by Van Abbemuseum and Sharjah Art Foundation and co-curated by Annie Fletcher, Director, Irish Museum of Modern Art and Hoor Al Qasimi, Director, Sharjah Art Foundation. Original exhibition architecture designed by Diogo Passarinho Studio.
Xenogenesis was on view at the Institute for Contemporary Art, Richmond, Virginia (2020), Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge (2020), and Buxton Contemporary, Melbourne (2020). Following its presentation in Sharjah, the exhibition will travel to the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Ljubljana in 2022 and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, in 2022.
The publication Xenogenesis, a polyphonic exploration of the work of The Otolith Group, will be officially launched in conjunction with the exhibition opening at Sharjah Art Foundation.
Presenting all bodies of work contained in the exhibition, the publication presents materials and graphics from the artists’ broader practice and brings together important thinkers, scholars, art historians and writers from disparate fields including Denise Ferreira da Silva, Annie Fletcher, Anselm Franke, Shanay Jhaveri, George E. Lewis, Mahan Moalemi, Fred Moten, Grant Watson, Vivian Ziherl and the late Mark Fisher. Edited by The Otolith Group and Megs Morley, and designed by Luca Frei, Xenogenesis will be available in the UAE exclusively at Sharjah Art Foundation shops alongside the exhibition opening on 13 November 2021.
Xenogenesis is published by Irish Museum of Modern Art and Archive books, with the generous support of the international partners and tour venues, Buxton Contemporary, Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Institute of Contemporary Art, Virginia, Sharjah Art Foundation, Southern Alberta Art Gallery and Van Abbemuseum.
The exhibition opening on 13 November will be accompanied by a Talks Programme which includes two conversations: ‘Visions of the Future, Speculations on the Present: Thinking with Octavia Butler’ with Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun, and ‘Xenogenesis: A Conversation with The Otolith Group’ that includes Anjalika Sagar, Kodwo Eshun, Annie Fletcher and Ciarán Finlayson.
The conversations will be followed by the official launch and signing of the monograph Xenogenesis: The Otolith Group.

“Sharjah Sustainable City” is reshaping the present to sustain the future
Throughout history, humanity has been on a lifetime quest to display grandiosity and style starting with the first architectural stone ever laid. Civilizations raced to envision, design, and build extraordinary cities that left memorable footprints till today. They all had one main thing in common: the future! Today, we continue on this journey to develop modern communities and cities that will mark the beginning of a new era.
Natural disasters and climate change are problems ignited by human consumption and are affecting the world drastically. While knowing the limitation of resources at hand, we are faced with a responsibility to duly respond to these major issues. If these natural disasters continue to increase, there is a risk we will be overwhelmed by their results and won’t be able to successfully overcome them; thus, the way we live, specifically the way we obtain and consume energy, should change. Not only should the energy consumption change, but also the amount of carbon dioxide pumped into the atmosphere from gas-powered vehicles and the dangerous, unhealthy environment it contributes in; in addition to the resources’ excessive consumption and the scarcity succeeding to the next generation. Add to that, the scarcity resulting from the soil contamination by the dumped wastes and garbage, the oceans contamination by the accumulation of chemicals and toxic substances, and the overfishing resulting in its depletion of food for the future. All of these are problems acquired from one generation to another and leaving behind more obstacles to face.
Our vision was to create a futuristic living concept that tackles the current problems we have, aiming to provide a better future while also preserving our vibrant tradition and heritage. Imagine a community that provides its residents with plenty of opportunities to enjoy a high quality of life. A world-class city that strives to preserve and improve its economy, the quality of its environment, and the health and well-being of its residents. Imagine a self-contained and sustainable project where every facility is connected to another and at a walking distance, where preserving the environment is put as a priority, and where people adopt a productive and healthy lifestyle. This might seem like a grand challenge, but has become a reality after a strategic partnership between Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) and Diamond Developers, a leading sustainable communities developer in the UAE has set to bring Sharjah Sustainable City to life.
At the heart of Sharjah near Al-Rahmaniya area, the first modern mixed-use project in the Emirate of Sharjah rises. Sharjah Sustainable City (SSC) delivers the highest standards of green economy and environmental sustainability. Designed perfectly and strategically to meet all three pillars of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental.
By the fusion of old and new, the future-ready city, Sharjah Sustainable City engulfs 280 villas and 100 apartments each designed specially to provide comfort and feasibility to its residents. SSC blends traditional and in-novative designs together: a traditional design that once integrated the right way in the futuristic concept of design, will carry many social and environmental benefits which can be enhanced using urban design and smart technology.
The question here is, what is traditional about SSC? Tradition starts by blending the villas with the environment while ensuring a bond with the wider surrounding community, which results in a human scale lenient towards social integration and community building. The villa designs are unique yet encompass a traditional feel: providing a desired level of privacy while maintaining a calm and bonded neighborhood feeling. The Ghaf, and Date palms have been part of our tradition, and thus we made sure they are available everywhere in order to further provide this sense of authenticity.
On the other hand, what is modern and futuristic about SSC? First, this city is suitable yet affordable to all individuals and families looking for a home of the future where their investment will serve a lifetime. The villas are built with nature in mind by using the most efficient materials and facades and powered by solar panels placed innovatively on every rooftop. More novelty is embedded in the design by using smart mobility, such as, au-tonomous shuttles and EV charging stations.
The smart design of this project will be serving the social life in many ways. To start with, the city is surrounded and shielded by three high gates that clearly display safety and security. Children can play on car-free roads and sikkas, while parents enjoy a free walk in the surrounding green areas. In addition to the peace of mind SSC provides, it will enable residents to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle with all the greenery around, and even landscaping their own private gardens. At SSC what you seek is only a few steps away due to its clever road designs where everything is connected together and at a walking distance.
Aside from its positive social outcome, SSC design also provides decisive environmental outcomes from multiple perspectives. First, the perfectly featured landscape encourages community farming and gardening by using the innovation of vertical farming that not only saves space and increases green areas across the project, but also provides beauty and creates a great habitat to the animals residing within the community. Villas and apartments are carefully surrounded by tall green trees that provide the shade needed, and are built using UV-reflective paint and double-glazed windows to avoid direct sunlight and minimize heat absorption which will decrease the load of air conditioners and chillers workload and reduce energy consumption.
Energy won’t be the only aspect solved by SSC’s nouvelle design. The villas will be equipped with low flow water fixtures which reduces water consumption and thus the production of carbon. The productive design of the units also allows all the landscape to be irrigated by the treated sewage water. Aiming to achieve a zero-waste of efficiency, SSC promoted mandatory practices of waste minimization, sorting, and recycling. The organic waste will be divested to an onsite biogas plant which will treat it and produce electricity while other wastes will be recycled through our waste management partner. This alone shows how innovative SSC is.
Today, we are faced by many problems to which we are obliged to find solutions. In fact, architects who are the key towards the future have to use their design to resolve the problems we face not only today but tomorrow also. To imagine a future different from the present is to seek a better life and leave behind today’s aspects of living. However, SSC is changing the present to a better one in order to sustain the future, drawing the futuristic ideas based on what we enjoy best about our present. We should truly use all our available resources now to create and design more sustainable cities. The scale at which we do something determines whether we are part of it or beyond it. Our cities should be organized to keep us at stake when it comes to the decision of shaping our lives. We have to look at cities as a whole in order to understand the full meaning of sustainable urban development. We want to be regarded as perfect beings, with creative minds, endless souls, and humane feelings. We also want to create a new sense of connection in our neighborhood, with people across the world, and also to the future generations.

Arada launches Masaar, an upscale forested community in Sharjah
Arada has announced the launch of Masaar, the developer’s third project, a mega community in the Al Juwaiza’a district of New Sharjah with a sales value of AED8 billion. The 19 million square foot upscale project will include 4,000 villas and townhouses in total, all set in eight gated districts linked by Masaar’s signature feature, a lushly landscaped and walkable ‘green spine’. Construction on Masaar will begin in the second quarter, and the first homes are scheduled to be handed over in the first quarter of 2023.
Masaar, or ‘path’ in Arabic, has been carefully designed to enable its residents to transform their lives by encouraging healthy living in harmony with nature. Featuring over 50,000 trees, Masaar’s green spine will be activated by footpaths and a range of different sporting facilities, all hosted in a safe, serene and nature-filled environment. Families residing in Masaar will enjoy a peaceful yet world-class living experience, with acres of green space allowing for forest walks, picnics, running, cycling or meditation.
One of Masaar’s main attractions will be a five-kilometre looped and continuous two-lane cycling track that will be able to cater to leisure riders as well as professionals. Residents and visitors from outside the community will be able to ride through lush woodlands, with resting spots and healthy cafes located adjacent to the track.
The focal point of Masaar is a forested heart featuring an experience centre, a Zad food truck district, a full-service fitness centre, a skatepark, a children’s adventure playground and an events space. Masaar’s community centre will contain an anchor supermarket, shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as a wide variety of services to cater to residents’ day-to-day needs. Also included in the Masaar masterplan is a large international school and nursery, located to the north side of the project.
HE Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Chairman of Arada, said: “Masaar offers a path to the ultimate lifestyle transformation, and a major addition to Sharjah’s residential landscape. It is a serene, exclusive and forested environment that also offers all the comforts of a modern urban district, offering you the best of both worlds.
“Our own results tell us that interest in high-quality, well-designed master-planned communities in Sharjah remains strong, and we are confident that the Masaar lifestyle and the impressive list of amenities will resonate with end-users and investors. Our ability to enhance both social and economic development is allowing Arada to take an ever more prominent role in the growth of Sharjah’s economy as well as the regional real estate industry as a whole.”
HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal, Vice Chairman of Arada, said: “Masaar has been designed to make its residents happier and healthier, while at the same time providing substantial benefits for the environment. “The abundance of green space, and an active lifestyle will also help to reduce the stresses of urban life, especially at a time when the importance of safety and security has never been higher. We believe that by uniting people with nature, this community will set a new standard for living in the UAE.”
Each home at Masaar has been designed to bring the nature-filled surroundings inside the house, while ensuring the privacy of its residents. Characterised by straight lines that complement the organic landscape around the home, the architecture of each unit has been designed to provide a continuous flow between outdoors and indoors, using floor-to-ceiling glass. Smart features, including remote access, climate and lighting control will be a standard feature of every Masaar unit. Every home also has direct access to leafy parks and will also incorporate natural features such as trees into its design. The community will be built to the very highest construction standards, catering to smart and sustainable living.
To conserve precious natural resources, Masaar’s green spaces will be irrigated by recycled water from the community’s onsite treatment plant. Water distribution will also be undertaken by a state-of-the-art irrigation system that will reduce the amount of water required and also monitor any leaks or losses in the system. Forested areas at Masaar will be grown using a mixture of species native to the UAE and lush plants and trees, that will together create a micro-climate that contributes to a reduction in overall temperatures, thus reducing cooling costs within the community.
Sales for the first district to be offered to the public, Sendian, began on Sunday 31 January. Sendian, which means oak tree in Arabic, consists of 445 homes, ranging in size from two-bedroom townhouses to five-bedroom Sendian Park Villas, all located close to the leisure and entertainment zone in the heart of Masaar. Construction on the Sendian district will begin in June this year, with the first homes scheduled to be handed over in the first quarter of 2023. The entire Masaar master plan is expected to take seven years to complete.
Masaar is ideally located in the up-and-coming district of Juwaiza’a, close to Tilal City, the Sharjah Mosque and Arada’s first project, Nasma Residences. The community has easy access to Emirates Road and Mleiha Road, and is 15 minutes’ drive from Sharjah International Airport, and 20 minutes’ drive from Dubai International Airport. The location is ideal for a convenient and traffic-free commute from Sharjah to Dubai or the Northern Emirates.
